Reaction Time in Speed Climbing

What reaction time measures, how it relates to the start system and why it is only one component of total performance.

Definition

Reaction time is the interval between the start signal and the athlete’s first legal movement off the start position.

Not the same as a false start

A legal reaction is fast but after the permitted signal. Leaving early is a false start; leaving late gives away metres.

Training use

Start practice with a real signal is more useful than only rehearsing the first moves in silence.
