Qualification and seeding
Athletes first need a performance that places them into the next stage. Depending on the event regulations, qualification can include timed seeding runs and/or elimination elements. The fastest valid performances determine ranking or bracket position.
From times to races
Once athletes enter elimination racing, the sport becomes directly head-to-head. A climber can have an outstanding personal best yet still be eliminated by the athlete in the neighboring lane. This is why championship racing rewards both raw speed and repeatability.
A fast run must also be valid
False starts, falls, failure to activate the finish pad or other rule violations can matter more than theoretical speed. Competition skill therefore includes producing a legal, complete run under pressure.
Not every event uses exactly the same structure

How to follow a bracket
