From experiment to international format

World Climbing officially tested four-lane Speed in Madrid in 2024, and the format appeared at The World Games in Chengdu in 2025. Further international testing in Meishan helped refine relay structures before the 2026 World Climbing Series.

Kraków 2026 milestone

In July 2026, Kraków hosted the first four-lane Speed qualification rounds in World Climbing history. The event included individual racing plus men’s, women’s and mixed-gender relay competition.

What relay racing adds

Relay formats introduce team composition, order and transitions to a discipline normally centered on individual execution. The route remains standardized, but the competitive problem now includes collective performance and tactics.

Mixed relay

A mixed-team relay made its international debut at the 2025 Meishan test event. World Climbing used these events to develop team composition, regulations and scoring ahead of the 2026 Series.

Treat the format as evolving

Four-lane and relay Speed are new enough that rules and event structures may continue to develop. For current team sizes, exchange procedures, scoring or sanctions, use the specific event regulations rather than assuming one experimental format is permanent.
