Definition
Qualification is the timed opening stage of a speed competition. It produces rankings used to seed later knockout rounds.
What it decides
Athletes usually get one or two official runs. The ranking order, not head-to-head racing, decides who advances and who meets whom in the bracket.
Why a slow qualifier still matters
A conservative qualifier can still put an athlete into a favourable half of the bracket. A failed qualifier ends the event.
