When does the clock start and stop?

Why the finish pad changes technique
The final target is not merely the highest climbing hold. Athletes must arrive in a position from which they can strike the timing pad reliably. A visually dramatic final leap is only useful if it produces a fast, valid activation.
Recognized timing equipment
World Climbing regulates automatic timing systems for international speed competition and identifies approved or recognized suppliers. This matters for record-quality measurement: a stopwatch or consumer video timestamp is useful in training but is not equivalent to sanctioned timing.

Full-route time is useful, but split timing can be even more diagnostic. Compare start-to-section, section-to-section and finish segments so a personal best does not hide where time was gained or lost.
