Why speed climbing uses auto belays

Elite speed ascents are too rapid for ordinary manual rope management to function like a normal top-rope belay. A purpose-designed automatic system can retract line continuously while keeping the athlete connected from above.

What the system does

The auto belay takes up line during the ascent and manages the athlete’s descent when the route ends or the athlete comes off the wall. The climber should feel minimal interference during upward movement, but the device remains safety-critical equipment.

Recognized competition equipment

World Climbing specifies automatic belaying systems for its events and currently identifies a sole event supplier/model. Equipment status can change, so facilities and competitors should use current manufacturer and governing-body documentation rather than an old web article when making safety decisions.
