Why Speed needs a specialized auto belay

Elite athletes climb too quickly for conventional manual rope management to function like ordinary top-rope belaying. A Speed auto belay must retract line rapidly enough to avoid interfering with the ascent while remaining a life-safety system.

Current World Climbing system

World Climbing's equipment page lists Perfect Descent as the event sole supplier and Speed PRO as the current model. The federation and Perfect Descent extended their partnership through the LA28 Olympic cycle after updated performance requirements were developed.

What the athlete should notice

A properly functioning system should allow the climber to accelerate without fighting slack or rope drag. If connection, retraction or device behavior appears abnormal, the athlete should stop and involve trained staff.
