Think in hip paths, not textbook poses

A good position may last only a fraction of a second. Instead of asking whether the athlete is always close to the wall, trace where the pelvis travels through the sequence. Opening away from the wall, rotating or crossing the center line can be efficient when the motion contributes to the next contact. It becomes costly when it creates a detour followed by braking or correction.

Direct force where the route needs it

Power matters, but direction matters too. A large leg extension that sends the body sideways when the next target requires upward travel may create extra work. Pulling hard with the arms while the feet are poorly organized can raise effort without producing the best trajectory. A useful coaching question is: where should the hips be going as this contact loads?

Different bodies can need different solutions

The route is standardized; athletes are not. Limb lengths, mobility, strength and preferred movement patterns affect whether a hold skip, bridge or dynamic transition is practical. One elite athlete’s beta can provide an idea without becoming a rule. The better test is whether the athlete can execute the movement quickly and repeatedly and whether it improves the following sequence.

Review body position on video

Use a short section, track the pelvis, identify obvious side-to-side or outward detours and compare the same athlete’s fast successful attempts. Look one movement ahead: did the position make the next contact early and strong? Change one variable at a time. Video cannot directly measure every force, but it can reveal when the body path begins to differ between clean and disrupted attempts.

How to judge a body-position change

A body-position adjustment should be evaluated by what it enables. Compare whether the athlete reaches the next target earlier, can apply pressure sooner and needs less redirection afterward. A position that appears compact on a freeze-frame can still be slow if the climber has to move out of it before continuing.

When comparing attempts, use the same section and similar entry conditions. Watch the pelvis, but also note the shoulders and feet because the whole chain determines the route of the center of mass. If a cue such as “hips in” or “rotate sooner” works only at reduced speed, keep testing until you know whether the athlete can preserve the advantage at race pace.
