What biomechanics research says about center-of-mass trajectory, vertical efficiency, lateral movement and why the fastest-looking line is not always the shortest-looking line.

Biomechanical work frames Speed as a trajectory-optimization problem: vertical progress is the objective, while unnecessary lateral or wall-perpendicular motion can cost time. Individual beta can still differ because athletes trade geometric efficiency against force, reach and contact reliability.

The movement optimization problem

The athlete must move approximately 15 metres upward while following a prescribed hold layout. Motion not contributing to useful ascent can represent lost efficiency, though lateral movement may still be required by route geometry or an athlete's body dimensions.

Center of mass

Tracking body or center-of-mass motion helps analysts move beyond counting holds. Two athletes can contact similar holds but follow different trajectories between them.

Why 3D matters

A front-view video captures vertical and lateral motion but can miss movement toward and away from the wall. Three-dimensional analysis shows why wall-perpendicular displacement belongs in the efficiency discussion.

No universal biomechanical beta

The shortest geometric path may demand a reach or force profile an athlete cannot reproduce reliably. Biomechanics should compare feasible strategies rather than declare one visual line universally correct.

Practical translation

Consistent video can track hip path, hold contacts, landmark times and positions at errors. These practical measures are simpler than laboratory motion capture but still useful for testing technique changes.
