Fast contact is not careless contact
Useful footwork combines target acquisition, approach angle, pressure and exit direction. The athlete needs to know where the foot is going before the leg arrives, contact the hold in a way that can accept force and then leave from that contact without settling. A rushed touch that produces a slip or double tap is usually slower than a slightly cleaner placement that creates immediate acceleration.
Feet organize route rhythm
On a memorized route, hands and feet form one timed pattern. A common loss of speed occurs when the athlete treats a foot as a correction after the hand has already arrived. Faster sequences tend to overlap tasks: the eyes move ahead, the next foot is already traveling and the current contact is being used to redirect the hips. This is why footwork should be judged by what happens after the foot lands.
Common footwork errors
Late visual targeting, low-pressure touches, overreaching and double adjustments are useful symptoms to track. Each can have different causes. A late foot may reflect poor visual timing; a slipping foot may reflect angle or hip position rather than simple carelessness. Rewind at least one movement before the visible error before deciding what to change.
How to practice cleaner feet
Choose a short section and one measurable goal: no double taps, consistent foot location, smoother hip path or a specific contact sequence. Establish the pattern below maximal speed, then raise speed while trying to preserve the same contacts. Film from an angle that shows the feet and hips. Compare several successful attempts rather than one personal best and keep any change only if it improves the next movement as well as the contact itself.

How to tell if footwork is actually improving
Do not measure progress only by whether the foot lands on the hold. Look for a cleaner chain of events: the foot arrives without a search, accepts pressure immediately, the hips continue along the intended path and the next hand or foot begins on time. A placement that becomes visually neater but causes the athlete to hesitate may not be an improvement.
Over several attempts, track double taps, slips, obvious corrections and section consistency. If a new contact pattern reduces errors but initially feels slightly slower, give it enough controlled repetitions to determine whether speed returns as the movement becomes familiar. The final test is not aesthetic precision; it is repeatable movement at progressively higher pace.
