Speed requires high force to be expressed quickly. Recent Speed-specific research supports force-velocity profiling as a useful lens, especially for lower limbs, while broader performance work links explosive qualities with faster climbing.

Relevant Speed-specific studies exist, but cohorts are small and should not be converted into universal normative cutoffs.

What a force-velocity profile means

Force-velocity profiling describes how force and movement velocity change across loading conditions and where power is expressed. It is more informative than asking only for a single maximal-strength number.

Speed-specific profiling

A 2024 study evaluated upper- and lower-limb force-velocity profiles in 26 Speed climbers divided by performance level and sex, adding discipline-specific evidence about rapid force expression.

Why lower limbs receive attention

Starts and route transitions require powerful leg extension. Speed literature repeatedly identifies lower-limb power as relevant, and jump tests are commonly used as practical measures.

Upper-body role

Hands and arms contribute to pulling, redirection and contact stability, but Speed's large holds make it different from finger-dominant small-edge climbing.

Interpretation limits

A correlation between power and faster times does not establish one ideal training method. Small elite samples can also make exact benchmark values appear more precise than they really are.
