What chalk can do

Climbing chalk can help manage moisture on the hands and make contact feel more predictable. The useful amount varies; excessive loose chalk is not automatically better and facilities may regulate chalk types or application.

Conditions still matter on a standardized route

The geometry can be identical while temperature, humidity, chalk buildup and hold condition differ. Athletes therefore need enough adaptability to preserve technique when the wall does not feel exactly like training.

Foot friction matters too

Speed footwork includes molded footholds and wall contacts. Shoe rubber, panel surface and contact quality all influence confidence, but the dominant technical goal remains accurate force direction rather than trying to maximize friction in isolation.

Do not modify competition surfaces yourself

Hold cleaning and wall maintenance are venue or event responsibilities. Athletes should not use unauthorized substances or alter the route surface.
