Mobility should support the positions an athlete needs to reach and control. General climbing research finds flexibility less predictive of performance than strength, endurance and power, so more range is not automatically better.
Mobility versus flexibility
Flexibility describes available range; mobility implies usable control through that range. Speed athletes need enough range to achieve their beta without compensation, but extreme passive flexibility is not a performance goal by itself.
Use route positions to identify needs
If an athlete repeatedly loses hip position or cannot place a foot without rotating away from the wall, assess whether technique, strength or mobility is actually limiting the movement.
Warm-up is preparation, not a flexibility contest
A warm-up should raise readiness for fast movement and progressively expose the athlete to relevant ranges and forces. Long aggressive stretching immediately before maximal work is not required simply because climbing involves large movements.
Strength through range
Controlled strength work through the ranges used on the route can develop both capacity and confidence. The appropriate exercise depends on the athlete and should not provoke pain.
Pain changes the question
Persistent or sharp pain is not a mobility problem to stretch through. Athletes with symptoms or a return-from-injury question should use qualified healthcare guidance.
