Effective speed training is organized around the qualities limiting the athlete. Full-route speed matters, but a useful program also separates technical practice, explosive work, strength, repeatability and recovery.
Start with the performance problem
Before adding exercises, identify where time or reliability is being lost. A slow first section, inconsistent feet and poor late-run velocity are different problems and should not receive the same training prescription.
Build a week around quality
High-speed climbing and explosive training depend on movement quality. Avoid treating every session as a fatigue contest. Place demanding speed or power work when the athlete is sufficiently fresh, then organize lower-intensity technical, strength or recovery work around it.
Move from general to specific
General strength and power can support performance, but the standardized route remains the task. As competition approaches, route-specific starts, sections, race simulations and high-quality full runs normally become increasingly important.
Progress one variable at a time
Progress can mean better time, cleaner execution, more reliable contacts, greater power, more quality repetitions or better recovery between runs. Increasing volume and intensity simultaneously makes it difficult to know what produced adaptation—or overload.
Individualize the plan
Training age, physical development, injury history, access to a regulation wall and competition calendar all matter. Youth athletes and anyone returning from injury need qualified coaching or clinical guidance rather than a generic online program.
