Recovery Between Speed Climbing Runs and Training Sessions

Recovery protects the quality of speed work. Research suggests physiological recovery after a single Speed effort can occur relatively quickly, but repeated maximal climbing, strength work and accumulated training stress still need deliberate management.

Rest between high-quality runs

A maximal Speed attempt is short, but that does not mean repetitions should be continuous. The performance-determinant literature cites work suggesting about five minutes can be sufficient for heart-rate recovery after Speed attempts; muscular and neural readiness may require individual judgment.

Use performance as feedback

If times slow, contacts become unreliable or movement changes substantially, more rest—or ending the high-speed block—may be more productive than forcing volume.

Recovery between sessions

Sleep, nutrition, total training load and non-climbing stress all affect readiness. A program should alternate demanding exposures with enough lower-load time to adapt.

Active versus passive recovery
